How can I clean my rings at home?

To make your own cleaning solution at home, we recommend using warm water with a little bit of dishwashing liquid. Scrub the jewellery lightly with a soft toothbrush, before rinsing thoroughly and allowing to dry. This is suitable to clean most diamond and gemstone jewellery. Lab Grown Diamond FAQs

How are lab-grown diamonds different from mined diamonds?

Lab-Grown Diamonds are man-made, by simulating natural conditions of extreme heat and extreme pressure (HPHT). Both mined and lab-grown diamonds are identical in chemical, optical and physical composition.

Are lab-grown diamonds a new phenomenon?

Diamonds were first created in a lab in the 1950’s. However, they weren’t gem quality diamonds that could be used in jewellery. Over the past few decades, the process has been perfected, however only really since around early 2010 has it been possible to produce large, white, gem quality diamonds that meet or surpass natural diamonds in terms of desirability.

How are lab-grown diamonds created?

In one of the processes, the diamonds are created by replicating certain favourable conditions that naturally exist 87 to 118miles below the Earth’s surface in the mantle of the Earth.

A sliver of an existing high-quality diamond, otherwise known as a seed, is placed in an environment that contains a specific recipe of carbon compounds at great pressures and temperatures. This process is called HPHT and most created diamonds, even the CVD ones go through some kind of post treatment process with HPHT.

If lab-grown diamonds are exactly the same as mined diamonds, why are they classified separately?

To the naked eye there is no difference between a mined and a created diamond. So that the customer may be well informed about their choices, we are bound by law and ethics to clearly disclose which diamonds are lab-grown or created.

What are the environmental implications of choosing a lab-grown diamond?

Since these diamonds are created within a lab, using only a fraction of energy and ecological damage that otherwise goes into creating and subsequently extracting a diamond, they are certainly more environmentally sound.

How much time does it take to create a diamond in the laboratory?

Depending on the colour and size, it can take between 10 days to a month to create a HPHT diamond in a laboratory.

Are lab-grown diamonds the same as ‘Diamond-Like’ materials?

No, they’re not the same. Diamond-like materials like Cubic Zirconia and Moissanite are not diamonds, whereas lab-grown diamonds are an absolutely true diamond with a wide range of colour, clarity, carat and cut possibilities.

What certification authenticates lab-grown diamonds?

Lab-grown diamonds are graded with the same standards as mined diamonds and carry reports from the International Gem Institute (IGI). It’s probable that other grading laboratories will also certify created diamonds in the future.

Do lab-grown diamonds have unique inscriptions for easy identification?

Yes, each lab-grown diamond we sell over 0.50cts has a unique ID inscribed on the diamond itself. This information is detailed in your certificate so you can always identify your diamond.

Why choose Lab-Grown Diamonds over Mined Diamonds?

Lab-grown diamonds are available at York as another choice for our customers. They provide you with an opportunity to purchase a larger, better quality diamond for the same price when comparing a lab-grown diamond to a mined diamond. They also become an option for the environmentally conscious consumer who wants a more “eco-friendly” choice.
